> A **status changer layout** is a per-target button arrangement for the status-changer widget on [terminals](../tempus/terminals.md), in the Voxbi app, and on the web. Each layout maps a set of [statuses](tempus_statuses.md) to buttons so different devices and departments see only the statuses relevant to them.

## Overview

Layouts decouple *what statuses exist* (managed on the [statuses](tempus_statuses.md) page) from *what a given device shows*.

## What it does

When someone opens the status changer, the client reports its source (terminal, app, or web) and its target (the employee or terminal). The system picks the most specific layout matching both, and falls back to the default when nothing matches.

![The layout editor: a grid size picker beside the arrangement of status buttons](tempus_layouts-images/button-grid.png)

The grid size sets how many columns and rows of buttons the target sees, and the editor beside it is what the employee will actually be looking at.

Every PBX keeps exactly one default layout. The **Default** switch in the layout list moves it without opening the layout: switch it on for another layout, confirm the move, and the one that held it is cleared as the list refreshes. The same thing happens from **Is default** on the edit form.

Because one layout always has to hold it, the default is moved rather than cleared — switching it off on the only default is refused, on the list and on the form alike. To hand it over, turn the switch on for the layout that should have it.

> [!IMPORTANT]
> Without a default, users with no specific layout see an empty status changer. More specific layouts win, so watch for overlaps that silently hide a layout from some users.
