SIP compatibility

Works with SIP devices: IP phones, gateways, doorbells, and paging systems.

SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) is the open standard that modern business phones use to make and receive calls. Because Voxbi is built on SIP, any device or system that speaks the same protocol can connect to it without requiring proprietary hardware or a locked-in vendor relationship. Desk phones, software-based phones, VoIP gateways, DECT base stations, door intercoms, and paging systems all qualify, provided they implement the SIP standard.

This matters in practice because it means you are not forced to replace working hardware when you move to Voxbi, and you are not tied to a single hardware brand for future purchases. Devices are added in the Voxbi Cockpit by registering their MAC address, and compatible models can be provisioned automatically so the phone configures itself when it connects to the network.

When you'd use SIP compatibility

  • An organisation that already owns a fleet of SIP desk phones and wants to move its phone system to the cloud without buying new hardware. Register the existing phones in the Voxbi Cockpit and they connect to the cloud PBX over the network.

  • A building that has a SIP-compatible door intercom or entry system. The device registers with Voxbi the same way a desk phone does, so calls from the door ring to a reception extension or a designated group.

  • A team that works across devices: desk phones at the office, the Voxbi softphone app on a laptop or mobile, and a web browser for occasional calls. All three connect over SIP and ring together or separately depending on how twinning and call preferences are configured.

How SIP compatibility works in Voxbi

  1. Register the device in the Voxbi Cockpit

    Navigate to SIP Devices and add a new device entry. Enter the MAC address, give the device a name, assign it to a user, and set its location and any relevant tags. For supported models, auto-provisioning handles the rest: the phone downloads its configuration automatically when it connects.

  2. Assign the device to a user

    Each SIP device is linked to a user account, which determines the extension it uses, the call preferences it follows, and the button layout it loads. One user can have multiple SIP devices, all ringing simultaneously when a call arrives.

  3. Configure carriers for external calls

    Outgoing calls to the public telephone network route through SIP carriers, which are the connections to external phone numbers. These are configured in the Voxbi Cockpit under SIP Carriers, and carriers for number delivery and telephony services are provided by Mixvoip.

  4. Monitor registration status

    The SIP Devices list shows each device's internal and external IP address and its registration state in real time, so you can spot a device that has lost its connection without waiting for a user to report it.

Frequently asked questions

Which SIP devices work with Voxbi?

Voxbi works with any device or system that implements the SIP protocol, including IP desk phones, software-based phones, VoIP gateways, DECT base stations, doorbells, intercoms, and paging systems. Supported models benefit from auto-provisioning, which means the device configures itself from the Cockpit without manual setup on the phone itself.

What is auto-provisioning and how does it work?

Auto-provisioning lets supported SIP phones download their configuration from the Voxbi Cockpit automatically when they connect to the network. You register the device's MAC address in the Cockpit, and the next time the phone boots or checks for a configuration, it pulls down the correct settings, extension, and button layout without any manual input on the device.

Can we connect a third-party SIP trunk or bring our own carrier?

Yes. Voxbi supports external SIP trunk connections, which means you can configure connections to other SIP providers via the SIP Carriers screen in the Cockpit. This is useful for redundancy or for integrating a specific carrier already under contract. Telephony services and number delivery are provided by Mixvoip.

Is the SIP traffic encrypted?

Voxbi supports SIP TLS (Transport Layer Security) for SIP signalling, which encrypts the connection between SIP devices and the cloud PBX. This applies to both hardware SIP phones and the WebRTC connections used by the Voxbi browser-based softphone.
