On-call response routing

Automatically call on-call staff in sequence until someone acknowledges the alert.

When something goes wrong outside business hours, the worst outcome is an alert that nobody receives. On-call response routing is built for exactly that risk: instead of calling one person once and stopping, Voxbi works through a list of on-call staff in sequence, moving to the next person if the previous one does not answer, until someone picks up and acknowledges the alert.

This pattern is common in IT operations, facilities management, healthcare, and any environment where certain situations require a human response within minutes. Voxbi can integrate with alarm systems, including dedicated alarm servers, to receive the trigger and then drive the escalation through your phone system.

When you'd use on-call response routing

  • An IT team that needs to reach an engineer when a server or application sends a critical alert, and needs confidence that someone is reached.

  • A care facility or hospital where a patient alarm or nurse-call event must be acknowledged by a member of staff before the system stops escalating.

  • An industrial or facilities operation where equipment sensors trigger alerts that require an on-call technician to confirm receipt.

How on-call response routing works in Voxbi

  1. Connect the alert source

    An alarm system (such as a Tetronik DAKS server) or another trigger is connected to Voxbi as a SIP carrier in the Voxbi Cockpit, enabling it to initiate calls into your phone system.

  2. Define the on-call sequence

    In the Voxbi Cockpit, configure the routing so the alert is sent to the first person on your roster, then the next, and so on.

  3. Voxbi calls each person in turn

    When the alert fires, Voxbi places calls down the list until one is answered.

  4. The responder acknowledges

    The on-call staff member answers the call to acknowledge the alert, which stops further escalation.

Frequently asked questions

What triggers the escalation?

The trigger is an inbound call or signal from a connected alarm system. Voxbi has a documented integration with the Tetronik DAKS alarm and communication server over SIP, covering patient calls, production fault reports, fire alarms, and similar scenarios. Other alarm sources that can initiate a SIP call can also be connected.

How is the on-call list managed?

The sequence is defined through Voxbi's call flow configuration in the Cockpit. Changing who is on call means updating the routing, or using a schedule-based routing step to switch between people at defined times.

Does this work with SMS as well as calls?

Yes. The Voxbi SMS gateway can complement voice escalation by sending text notifications to on-call staff in parallel, serving as an additional channel when a call alone may not be enough.
